How is it that 최 became romanized as Choi?
Main Post:
It obviously invites mispronunciation by foreigners as 초이. What's wrong with Chweh or just Cheh, since the /w/ is practically silent?
Top Comment: Note that this happens on many other languages too. For example in Russian, Putin's first name "Vladimir" is not actually pronounced Vladimir, the "d" is pronounced closer to "j" (due to palatalization), like "Vlajimir". But they write "Vladimir" anyway, because that's how it has been written in Latin alphabet for ages. From the Wikipedia page: Transliteration is not primarily concerned with representing the sounds of the original but rather with representing the characters, ideally accurately and unambiguously. Writing 최 as "Cheh" as you mentioned will bring confusion with existing surnames such as 채. Of course, you could argue that how these surnames are transliterated are far from being consistent, but they have already settled for over a century, and changing them now will bring about even more confusion. Let's think of this at a different angle too. Consider the English last name "Icke". The 'e' at the end is completely useless, yet bajillion people write their name with a silent 'e'. Why not just write it as "Aik"? That probably wouldn't happen because 1. it looks funny, and 2. people are used to the counterintuitive spelling anyway. Why perpetuate the error? You probably realised by now that it isn't an "error". One other way to look at it is that romanization =/= Anglicization. The Latin alphabet isn't exclusively used by English, but dozens of other languages as well. You need to spell your name in a way that the speakers of those other languages can approximate your name by just reading the characters intuitively. Also, from an etymological perspective, the ᅬ vowel had actually been pronounced how it's spelled, /oj/, like boy, some two to three centuries ago. It has since undergone monophthongization and then vowel breaking, leading to the current pronunciation.

Question for current teachers: How do you teach the English spelling of 최? And if you choose to spell it "Choi", why?
Main Post:
The most popular spelling is "Choi". But as English speakers (with experience learning Korean), we ALL know that is not what 최 sounds like. I have never taught my students to write their name as "Choi" and it has caused some disputes with Korean English teachers. I want to know why "Choi" is the most popular answer when it's not even the right way to say the name.
To me it makes no sense. If a 최 person goes abroad and has "Choi" written on their business card or on any formal document, absolutely no English speaker will say their name right. Even Papago says the name wrong in English! It's just bugs me.
Is there a legit reason 최 is written as "Choi" in English? Or do people choose to spell it that way because of tradition?
Top Comment: It doesn't make sense to an English speaker but there are many languages that use the roman alphabet. If you type choi into google translate and pick German, the pronunciation sounds a lot like 최.

Top Comment: Honestly gonna be devastated if she gets eliminated. Will still support whoever gets to debut for sure but will not be the same if Yena's gone.
Do you think Choi Yena will make it to the final 12?
Main Post:
So currently I'm really worried, have never rooting for a bias this hard before. I know she's quite popular, but based on youtube fancam views, Naver search, she's not getting that much attention. What do you think?

It's really still too early to know or expect anything. If she makes a strong enough impression in the future, it's very possible. Don't give up!
